Simple and Easy Steps

The chair you are about to use has a number of features which can help you to minimise discomfort. Refer to the chair adjustment instructions overleaf (and the booklet kept in the storage slot under the chair seat) but also read the following:

  1. The chair is designed to move and to encourage you to move: do not lock it in position whilst in use.
  2. The chair helps you to reach the desk by rocking forward with you. To get the best benefit, you should practice this movement a few times. Try to ensure that you do not stay in contact with the backrest when sitting upright or leaning forwards: the backrest is for support only when leaning backwards.
  3. When leaning backwards, point the toes to the floor: this movement of the ankles helps to pump blood back up the legs and decreases leg lethargy.
  4. If the rocking mechanism does not move freely, check that the release control knob (under the seat on the right hand side) is fully unlocked by rotating fully anti-clockwise towards the unlocked padlock symbol, and that the balance adjustment has been set correctly (see over).

Enjoy the chair . . .

  1. Lift the backrest angle adjustment lever (on the right hand seat edge, middle lever) and lean forward on the chair to release the backrest to the fully forward position.
  2. Turn the locking control knob (found centrally underneath the seat on the right hand side) fully anti-clockwise towards the unlocked padlock symbol to release the rocking mechanism. Sit on the chair and rock it until the seat is level. Turn the locking control knob fully clockwise towards the locked padlock symbol to prevent the chair rocking. The seat should remain fixed, with the seat parallel to the ground. Carry out the rest of the adjustments with the seat rocking mechanism locked in this position, before releasing it for use.
  3. Tuck your bottom as far back into the seat as possible, and adjust the height of the backrest (using the lever at the base of the backrest itself) to support the small of your back comfortably, and lock the backrest in position. Experiment with the angle of the backrest using the control in 1 above until it feels comfortable.
  4. If fitted, the lumbar pump can provide extra lumbar curve support when required. Use the black plastic bulb on the right hand side at the base of the backrest to increase lumbar curve by pumping the bulb to add more air. To decrease the curve, release the air by pressing the valve button on the bulb.
  5. Adjust the depth of the seat using the rear lever on the right hand side. Lift the button and slide the seat forwards or backwards until you have a gap of about 3-4" between the backs of your knees and the front of the seat when your bottom is tucked into the back of the seat.
  6. Use the height adjustment button (the front lever on the right hand side) to adjust the height of the chair until your heels are just (up to ¼") off the floor with your legs relaxed. NB: It is very important for you to adjust the chair to the right height for YOU, not for your desk. The desk height should then be adjusted accordingly, so that with your arms relaxed, your elbows just rest lightly on the desk top.
  7. Adjust the height (and width and depth if desired) of the arms until comfortable. To adjust the arm height, squeeze the silver release button in the middle of the upright of the armrest, slide the arm up or down to the required height and release the button. The width can be altered by loosening the easy-turn screws underneath the seat holding the arms in place, adjusting them to the required width, and re-tightening the screws. To adjust the arm depth (if fitted), press the silver button on the inside of the arm top and slide the arm top back or forward to the desired position.
  8. Adjust the balance of the chair for your weight: Relax ... and release the seat locking mechanism. If the chair rocks backwards, then increase the spring tension by turning the control knob (underneath the seat on the left hand side) clockwise towards the ‘+’ symbol; if it rocks forwards, then decrease the spring tension by turning the knob anti-clockwise towards the ‘-‘. In each case, lock the seat before making the adjustment, and check it by sitting back in the seat, and releasing the locking mechanism again to see whether further adjustment is necessary. The angle of recline of the backrest may be adjusted again if necessary (see 1 above). Finally, release the lock to use the chair.
  9. To adjust the height of the headrest (if fitted), simply slide it up or down. The headrest can also be tilted backwards and forward if required.
