Style and Comfort

Choosing your perfect style

Style and Comfort

Stressless has a huge range of recliner styles. Whilst being an aesthetic decision, each is built with unique padding and ergonomic features. This is the most personal step, because you can only truly know comfort by feeling it.

Don't Skip Trying Them: We can't stress this enough: you need to try different models. Your ideal recliner should give you precise support in your lower back, neck, and arms. Spend time in each one. Lean back, shift around, and really feel how it supports your body. Is the lumbar support right? Does your head rest comfortably? Are your arms fully supported?

Your Personal Fit: What feels perfect to one person might not to another. This step is about listening to your body to find the style that gives you ultimate relaxation and the right ergonomic support.

Choosing your size

Getting the Right Fit Is Important

Once you've narrowed down the style, picking the right size is crucial. Most Stressless recliners come in small, medium, and large. While the overall size changes, the biggest difference you'll notice is the seat width.

  • Personal Preference: Your ideal size depends on your body and how you like to sit.
  • Think About How You Sit: Do you like to curl up? Do you often share your recliner with a pet? If so, a wider seat might be more comfortable.
  • Snug or Roomy: On the flip side, some people prefer a snugger fit that cradles them more. Try different sizes of your chosen style to see what feels most natural and supportive for your body. The right fit means better comfort and ergonomic benefits.

For the very best support in choosing the perfect chair, we recommend visiting us in one of our 4 welcoming stores: London, Marlow, Amersham, Bristol. We can also help discuss size and fit by phone, we all know the collection incredibly well and most of us have stressless in our homes too.

Choosing your Chair base

Classic | Signature | Cross | Power

Your Stressless recliner's base isn't just a structural base giving you a 360 degree swivel; it really changes how comfortable it is, how it moves, and its overall look.

  • The Classic Base: This is the iconic Stressless look, the Classic base offers stable, smooth reclining – perfect if you like a traditional feel with solid support. It's a design statement that shows off the Stressless heritage.
  • The Signature Base: If you want more movement and a modern vibe, the Signature base is a great choice. Besides the even smoother 360-degree swivel, the Signature base adds a gentle rocking motion and a sleeker, often polished aluminum design. This extra movement can be incredibly relaxing and lets you find more dynamic sitting positions, which we would choose every time.
  • The Cross Base: Like the Signature, the Cross base also offers extra swivel and movement, but with a more industrial or minimalist look. It has a distinct visual appeal while still giving you the superior comfort and flexibility you expect from Stressless.
  • The Power Base: Most similar to the Classic base in looks but with an inbuilt footrest. The power base is most suitable for those who struggle to reline on their own or dont have the room for a footrest but still want to enjoy the recline.

When you're trying out recliners, pay close attention to how each base feels. Do you prefer the solid feel of the Classic, or do you enjoy the extra swivel and gentle motion of the Signature or Cross bases?

How to choose your fabric or leather

Our Fabric & Leather Guide

The final step in personalizing your Stressless recliner is choosing the right upholstery. Stressless offers a wide range of premium leather and fabric options. Each one feels different and has its own care requirements. This choice really comes down to your personal preference and how you see your recliner fitting into your life.

  • Abelia (Fabric) - A luxurious wool blend with a mix of yarn types leaving a distinct depth and structure to the final weave.
  • Calido (fabric) - A wool-felt fabric that feels incredibly soft against the skin with excellent elasticity. The properties of wool allow the material to breathe, thus naturally regulating the temperature.
  • Clover (Fabric) - The one for you if you love a natural, sustainable and very soft wool blend. Cosy, breathable and durable with a two tone apperance.
  • Holly (Fabric) - Made from old wool garments, Holly is the most sustainable fabric on offer. With a beautiful two tone weave and a range of nautal colour options available.
  • Peony (Fabric) - One of our most popular fabrics, the traditional pattern brings a warm inviting feel to any stressless chair.
  • Yoredale (Fabric) - The one for you if you love British, sustainable wool with a deep texture and weave. Stretchy, durable and breathable.
  • Batick (Leather) - a corrected, pigment-improved leather, which has had most blemishes removed. Batick is a heavy-duty leather that has a protective layer of lacquer that simplifies cleaning.
  • Paloma (Leather) - a slightly corrected leather which means that some of the natural marks, scars and insect bites can show through. This gives it a more authentic, natural look and feel. A thin coat of lacquer simplifies cleaning and gives some protection. Due to its soft, natural, comfortable feel and range of colours. Paloma is a very popular choice.
  • Velaro (Leather) - A soft to tough, thick, full bodied leather, with an elegant grain and a natural look. There is light embossing on the leathers surface to mitigate grain variation, though some may still show through.
  • Noblesse (Leather) - the most exclusive leather in the range is a full grain semi-aniline which means fully penetrated dye and has only a very thin protective coating. This allows the leather to keep the natural softness and warmth that characterises a first-class leather. Minor colour variations and natural marks can occur. Noblesse will gain the most character of all the leathers over time, will feel the softest to touch but will require a little more maintenance that the alternatives.
