Learn all about the Tripp Trapp

Tripp Trapp Tips

Tripp Trapps are for everybody. From newborn babies reclining in the newborn set, to your baby's first highchair, to the chair your toddler clambers in and out of and pulls up to help you cook, to the extra chair for anyone at a big family gathering.

This guide can help you figure out what you will want at each step of the child's development.

Designed by Peter Opsvik in 1972 inspired by watching his own son grow. The Tripp Trapp and its many accessories have seen some changes through the years. This guide will also help explain the compatibility of the various different Tripp Trapps and Accessories.

Tripp Trapp Tips

Getting Started

How To Use your Tripp Trapp

Tripp Trapps were inspired by watching children sit on stairs. Peter Opsvik noticed that when children can put their feet at an appropriate height, they sit well and move more.

To help your child get the most of their chair, they should be re adjusted around every 6 months to account for growth.

This image shows the smaller seat being used to sit on at a height that allows the elbow to comfortably rest on the table, and the larger panel being used as a footrest at a comfortable height for the child to rest their feet.

2003 Update

Changes to the Tripp Trapp

In 2003 the Tripp Trapp was altered slightly to allow for the use of a new style of Baby set that is fully plastic. Shown in this image, the new Babyset's allowed for a greater variation in colour and easier cleaning.

To tell the difference we reccomend that you measure the distance between the two wooden back rest slats:

  • 1 inch (2.5cm) - Original style Tripp Tapp (Pre 2003), Compatible with wooden and leather Babyset (No longer available).
  • 1.5 inch (3.8cm) - Post 2003 style Tripp Trapp, Compatible with the newer plastic Babyset's

2024 Update

Changes to the Babyset and Harness

In 2024 Stokke changed the Babyset and Harness, the new versions are called Babyset2 and Harness2. With the update, the Harness2 now attatches directly to the Babyset2.

For this reason, there are important factors to consider in the compatibility if you are buying a new accessory for you current Tripp Trapp.

If you have the Babyset (Shown in the image with two hooks per wooden bar on the backrest), then the compatible Harness is the one with a cat shaped buckle, that clips to D-rings that attatch to the frame of the Tripp Trapp.

If you have the Babyset2 (Shown in the image, with one wide hook per wooden bar on the backrest) then the compatible Harness2 is has a circle buckle and attatches directly to the Babyset2.

We are currently stocking the older style of Babyset while stocks last, which is compatible with the Harness that attatches directly to the Tripp Trapp. We no longer hold stock of the compatible Harness, but it can be purchesed directly from Stokke.

Style it your way

Young children love bright colours so Stokke have curated a variety of options. We recommend you choose the high chair in your favourite colour but the baby set in a bright colour your child will enjoy. When the babyset is removed the chair becomes more “you” and fits with your interior design scheme.

Please note Whitewash and Hazy Grey colours are transparent and the wood grain is visible through the stain. It looks great if you like to see the natural wood grain.

Cushion: Use ONLY the backrest cushion until your child is out of nappies. Your child will be more comfortable, plus the wooden seat can be wiped clean, and it's much easier to get your baby in and out. All cushion sets are completely machine-washable.

Cleaning: The Tripp Trapp ® is made of solid, varnished or painted wood, and needs to be cleaned similar to a dining table. Stokke ® recommends no detergents. Use only warm water, and remember to wipe the chair dry after cleaning.

More Buying Tips

Tripp Trapp ®: This is not just a highchair, this is the start of teaching your child to sit with the correct posture, the Tripp Trapp ® chair should be adjusted once or twice a year to adapt to your ever growing child. If you lose or forget the tips on how to adjust the chair, give us a call we will be only too happy to help.

Newborn: Choose a colour that suits you, and use the extra textiles to allow for the other to be in the wash. The Newborn also acts as a rocker when used on the floor.

Harness: Every high-chair is safer if you use a harness. Not all children will try and climb out of a high chair but physically advanced children might, even at 6 months. As with all high chairs, DO keep the harness on the chair at all times.
