1950s: from Greek ergon ‘work’ and 'onomics' meaning on the pattern of economics.
That's an easy one to answer - movement. For us even the very best ergonomic chair is instantly un-ergonomic if it does not have enough movement and enough forwards tilt. Without those two factors combined with excellent design, your body cannot move - and movement is everything.
It's essential to maintain healthy bones, joints, energy levels, aid concentration, boost your immune system and maintain endorphin levels - we are built to MOVE and we become rapidly unhealthy if we don't. All the greatest ergonomic designs are designed to generate, aid and promote more movement throughout your working day. Some chairs do this very gently, such that you barely even notice it happening, and others introduce movement in a big way - maximising your fitness and long term health while sitting.
It's all the same principles as we mentioned above, but movement is even more important because at home, there is far less reason to get up and move around.
